The Mount Morris Park Historic District was first designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Being one of the earliest landmarked districts in the 5 boroughs in Harlem, it covers a 16 block area in Central Harlem.
Going north from West 118th to West 124th Streets and West from Fifth Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard (7th Avenue) Mount Morris Park Historic District showcases a remarkable blend of late 19th and early 20th century residential and church architecture associated with the Gilded Age.
The well known "Doctors' Row" commonly known as West 122nd Street, Mount Morris Park West, and Malcolm X Blvd. all demonstrate the remarkable survival of substantially unaltered 19th-century streetscapes, rare in most areas of Manhattan.
Once the walking tour comes to a close you will be treated to a lunch at a local Harlem restaurant.
Welcome to Harlem takes pride in showing off our beautiful city and sharing the history of the Mount Morris Park Historic District and all of the beautiful sights along the way!

I cannot remember when I was so inspired and moved by a simple walking tour. Carolyn was knowledgeable and made the tour about harlem's past and its present a must do when in NYC, for tourists and NYC locals alike.

I took my 15 year old daughter on her first trip to NYC. Among our many fulfilling adventures, the Harlem walking tour was one of the very best. Our guide was knowledgeable, warm and enthusiastic. She covered both historical and current events as we walked through the neighborhoods. My daughter liked it so much she wants to go back for the jazz tour when we are in NYC again. I highly recommend Welcome to Harlem. It's a great organization.

We learned a lot about Harlem and enjoyed ourselves despite a rainy day.

I was very pleased to have such a concentrated look at the areas around 125th ST. A wise way to do it all. I felt we covered a great deal in less than two hours--and had a few extras thrown in.

Both my husband and I enjoyed the walk very much. It was so informative and our guide was very knowledgeable and interestingly added her own character. We will recommend this tour to all our friends.

I first became aware of Welcome to Harlem through a website called SweetJack, which is similar to LivingSocial. They were offering a great deal, a 1 1/2 hour walking tour through Harlem. Even though I am a native New Yorker, I haven't experienced anything like this so I thought this would be a good catalyst into taking advantage of this whatever the cost may be. I took some time to research Welcome to Harlem before buying the deal. Their website was very easy to navigate and explained in detail all the various tours available so there was nothing left for me to wonder about, all of my questions were answered from the website, which really helped to make my overall experience seamless. Before I decided on a day, it was a matter of seeing what the weather would be like and if it was conducive to a walking tour. It turned out that the weather was exquisite on the day we chose to take the walking tour. It was dry, sunny and in the high 70's. When I called, the woman who answered had a very warm and welcoming voice. She explained the details of the tour and what our expectations should be for the day. We took the rail from Queens and found their office with no trouble. Cheryl was our tour guide for the afternoon. She told us that the tour would take about an 1 hour and a 1/2. It ended up being twice as long due to Cheryl's wealth of knowledge and our groups continued conversation. We really enjoyed it. We all connected nicely with each other. When we parted company, we exchanged emails with Cheryl because she wanted to share information about the other tours they offer. And by the time we got home, Cheryl had already sent us a very nice email with all the information we had asked for. I have no complaints and no suggestions on what could be done better. They were wonderful! Welcome to Harlem is a wonderful organization. They hire residents of Harlem, so that adds depth to the emotions because it's their home turf. I am really glad I discovered this service because as a retired school teacher, it will be nice to take guided tours during the summer from a company with such deep knowledge. Kenn Agata

Carolyn gave us a terrific walk around Harlem, learning about the changes in 125th street in the last few years, and then learning about all the beautiful brownstones and their architectural details. We learned of old and new restaurants and jazz clubs. We'll be back! The Rushtons

Our tour guide, Sheryl(sp?), was excellent. She obviously loves the history and beauty of Harlem. We really enjoyed learning so much from her. Hope to take a different tour with her our next time in the city.

This tour exceeded expectations. The tour guide/owner went out of her way to give us a peek at what a wonderful neighborhood Harlem is. She was articulate, well informed and delightful to spend a couple of hours with as we walked through neighborhoods and business districts. She was well versed on community efforts to maintain the historic character of one of NYC oldest sections and shared information about other tours and upcoming events in Harlem.

At the beginning of may we had a very interesting walk round Harlem with lots of historical background information and good advice for our further stay. It was as well interesting and funny.

Welcome to Harlem was very good. I thought it was just wonderful. You never would have thought that Harlem would come back so much. The brownstones are really beautiful. Carolyn was knowledgeable and helpful.

Our guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and clearly devoted to Harlem -- its history and its future. As a New Yorker who is not totally unfamiliar with Harlem, I would have preferred a little less time on 125th Street and a little more elsewhere. The brownstone streets we visited around Mount Morris were lovely. All in all, a very worthwhile tour.

I loved the welcome to Harlem tour. It is a 90 mins of fun, history, culture, people, and living. The guide is local, and she basically owns Harlem. She will introduce you to her favorite spots, delicious cupcake shops, add lots of restaurants to your list, and introduce you to many friendly neighbors. I had a great time! And will recommend this to all my friends and anyone that wants to explore different neighborhood in NYC.
