  1. The Best Way to See Harlem

Posted by Sue P. on 14th Jul 2013

Our Welcome to Harlem tour was conducted by Carolyn Johnson, who was born and raised in Harlem and has a passion for promoting its history, its people, its future, and more. Carolyn guided us on a walking tour of Harlem's beautiful historic buildings, residential brownstones, parks, famous sites and people. Included was our limited-time (which could be extended) experience at a Harlem Gospel church where we enjoyed the music part of a Sunday worship service. We capped off the event with brunch at Native, a great place to eat with a great owner/manager who greeted us so warmly. I highly recommend this particular tour because of Carolyn's extensive knowledge of Harlem.

  2. A marvellous exoerience

Posted by Gill H. on 14th Jul 2013

Our thanks to Carolyn for a wonderful Harlem Gospel and Brunch Tour on February 3rd. We were the only participants, giving us Carolyn to ourselves - a real privilege. We could never possibly have gained so much knowledge about Harlem without her - Carolyn was full of anecdotes, opinions, information and we came away on a real high. Thank you - can't wait to come back and do it again!

  3. Other tourists didn't know I was a tourist: Excellent Experience

Posted by Stella B. on 13th Jul 2013

I booked the walking tour of Harlem mostly because I wanted to experience a baptist church - the tour excelled on every level. Carolyn was extremely knowledgeable about the area and knew not just the tourist attractions (Franco the Great) but also just people passing us on the street. She took me to see the old brownstones that other tours don't show you. The church she visits know her well, we didn't have to queue with the other tourists and I was allowed to sit in the main body of the church. It was only when we left with them that the other tourists realized I wasn't actually a parishioner! The church experience was out of this world, and the choir were brilliant. There were even some liturgical dancers. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting New York. Thank you Carolyn I had a wonderful time!

  4. The Harlem tour was fantastic and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in going to Harlem as a tourist destination

Posted by Conny R. on 13th Jul 2013

The Harlem tour was fantastic. The walk was informative and entertaining, our guide was very passionate about Harlem and also very local which made the tour a personal and rewarding experience. The Gospel Mass was our highlight. I highly recommend this tour as it really was wonderful to listen to a guide who was genuinely passionate and down to earth.

  5. Wonderful morning spent in Harlem understanding so much about the history

Posted by Rosina G. on 13th Jul 2013

Having read about this tour in an English newspaper before coming to NY with a friend, we decided this was one thing we wanted to do. We did the walking tour/gospel choir church service/Harlem brunch and it was one of the best experiences of our NY trip. The wonderful Carolyn Jackson explained so much of the history of Harlem, and the impact of the new development there. The service with the gospel choir was inspirational and uplifting, and the brunch a wonderful end to the morning. I can't recommend Welcome to Harlem enough- a fantastic experience. I only wish I had realized before going that Carolyn had written a guide to Harlem as I would have read it- however, not to worry- its on it's way from Amazon now!

  6. Every aspect of the tour was interesting

Posted by Laurie on 20th Jun 2012

I especially loved the area with the brownstones - something that I never realized was in Harlem. I look forward to coming back to see the painted security doors by "Franco the Great" !

  7. Something really different

Posted by Alan on 9th Jun 2012

An excellent walking tour of Harlem. An excellent and friendly guide who knew everything there was to know about Harlem and lived in the area. The gospel service was amazing and the included lunch a bonus. You need to set aside about 5 hours to complete this tour.

  8. Carolyn gave us an insightful introduction to the vibrant community of Harlem

Posted by Unknown on 6th May 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our gospel and brunch tour of Harlem. Carolyn did a great job of conveying both the history of the area as well as the vibrant life of the community. Everything was incredibly well organised; getting a group of 30 into an Easter Sunday gospel service is impressive! The catered brunch was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and relaxed.

  9. one of the most interesting and informative things I did during my visit to New York

Posted by Ingrid McKenna on 24th Mar 2012

My guide Carolyn was polite, friendly and knowledgable and made the walking tour a treasured experience. She answered any questions and was able to provide useful tips of places to visit on my own - which I followed up on a few days later with absolute delight. I wouldn't havefelt so comfortable returning to this area on my own had it not been for her insightful commentary. The church visit and singing was fantastic, but the CD I chose to purchase didn't quite match the live singing I heard. I'd recommend this tour and guide to first time visitors or anyone unfamiliar with Harlem. A knockout

  10. A Harlem day

Posted by Mai on 15th Nov 2011

I was alone at the tour and I really enjoyed it. It was very nice to meet Franco the great! It was a very beautiful morning walk with a friend from the neighborhood. My only miss like was that the Gospel at the church looked very much like a tourist attraction and nothing more. And I would really love it if the tour could include the inside of Apoll o Theater but even at the end when the tour guide left me there to visit it on my own it was closed! A great moment was when I visited the inside of a house. I’m really grateful for that! Thank you guys! I loved it! Excellent job!

  11. Discovery of Harlem

Posted by RatePoint Reviewer on 12th Nov 2011

Carolyn did it absolutely wonderful. The only disappointmen that the gospel church happening was rather short of time and almost exclusively for/with tourists. For us this could last for at least 2 hours!
We surely return once to Harlem, Apollo,...

  12. Fabulous Harlem Experience!!!!!!

Posted by Canadian Fishing Girls on 1st Nov 2011

We were interested in seeing Harlem up close, but weren't sure the best and most informative way to do it. Since we had the opportunity to tour Harlem on a Sunday, we wanted to see the Gospel Church Service. We found your website on online and thought this would be perfect for a group of seven-- a more personal tour to see what it was all about. It was AWESOME!! Carolyn went above and beyond our expectations. She catered to what we were interested in seeing. We were so fortunate to meet Franco the Great on the tour! We would highly recommend Welcome to Harlem to anyone who really wants to see and learn about Harlem up close. Thanks so much Carolyn for a memorable day!!!

  13. A wonderful day in Harlem

Posted by Ulla and Stefan from Sweden on 16th Oct 2011

The Harlem Gospel tour was all you could ask for and even more!! Very informative ,fun and inspirational.Thank you Carolyn for a wonderful day that will remain in our hearts for a long time.

  14. I am MOVING to Harlem now :)

Posted by Michelle on 4th Oct 2011

Loved the personalized tour from Carolyn. The restaurant was so unique and great food. The Gospel singing was great (but was so loud & hard to understand words, I think b/c they seated us right in front of the organ and music.) The cool brownstones, neat "Franco Art" on the business security gates, clean streets, so much history...we are staying in Harlem next time we come to Manhattan, since the B&B prices are more reasonable too! Our whole tour was from another country,so they had no clue who most of the history figures mentioned during the tour were. (should probably give a short explanation of why Maya Angelou or Marcus Garvey are important to Americans) but they loved it too. Took about 1 1/2 hours longer than quoted so we missed going to the other NYC tourist site we had planned, but we'll see that next trip. This was so worth it! Will make my family take this tour next time we are in NY.

  15. The best tour in Manhattan

Posted by Ottawa Canada on 27th Sep 2011

During my four-day visit to New York I did boat, bus and walking tours of different regions of Manhattan and Brooklyn. By far, the walking tour of Harlem was the most interesting and informative one. Carolyn, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable on its history. She took us around the neighbourhood and we had the opportunity to meet the people of Harlem. I recommend the tour with Welcome to Harlem to anyone visiting New York. If I make it back there, Harlem is where I will be staying.

  16. Gospel and brunch Sunday morning tour

Posted by Nicky and Sally from Australia on 17th Sep 2011

Our guide, Carolyn, really knew her stuff and guided us around the fascinating streets & parks of Harlem with expertise and good humour. While the bigger bus tour groups had to wait in line outside the church, our smaller walking group was given priority access to the rousing gospel service ; a terrific experience for all. Carolyn is clearly well l iked and respected by fellow Harlemites in the neighbourhood and with good reason! The brunch was delicious too. Thanks for a great morning.

  17. Awesome tour

Posted by Rafael on 15th Aug 2011

The gospel and brunch walking tour in Harlem was one of the most enjoyable city walks I have taken. It was led by Carolyn a knowledgeable, relaxed guide and warm hearted person, who was born and raised in Harlem. I took the tour together with my mom and Carolyn answered all the questions we had. We learned about history, architecture, music, art, local customs and more. The cherry on top; Carolyn gave us a peek in her own beautifull brownstone home!! What a great way to see a city! I am recommending this tour to all my friends!!

  19. Super Harlem Gospel tour - highlight of our visit

    Posted by jaja0001 on 24th May 2011

We did the Sunday morning Gospel Tour with Carolyn, Welcome to Harlem owner, as our local guide. During our tour of Central Harlem we saw great graffitti artworks and where able to get on the picture with the artist, we got insights on Harlem through the eyes of a local, we went to a great Gospel mass and had lunch in a Southern Style restaurant wit h typical comfort foot like macaroni and cheese and BBQ ribs. Not sure if I can blame it all on our Harlem tour, but I gained 3 kilos during our NY visit. I can really recommend Carolyn, a self made, strong entertaining woman with great knowledge. One of the highlights of our NYC visit.
